Tattoos remain in the skin permanently due to the way the ink is deposited and how the body's immune system responds. Here are the key factors:  1. Ink Placement: Tattoo ink is injected into the dermis, the layer of skin below the epidermis. The dermis is more stable than the epidermis, which sheds and regenerates regularly. 2. Immune Response: When the ink is injected, the body's immune system recognizes it as a foreign substance. White blood cells called macrophages attempt to engulf and remove the ink particles. However, the ink particles are too large to be completely broken down and removed. 3. Macrophage Cycle: Some macrophages that ingest ink particles remain in place in the dermis, keeping the ink where it was injected. Over time, other macrophages may also ingest the ink particles, but they also stay in the dermis, maintaining the visibility of the tattoo.
